Maihi mahi gets international exposure
In a possible first for any New Zealand filmmaker, writer, director and producer Renae Maihi has three films screening on the international film festival circuit, two of them in te reo Maori.
Ka Puta, Ko Au, a short action film made as part of this year’s Maoriland Film Festival Native Slam initiative with two other native filmmakers, will have its international premiere at the ImagineNATIVE Film Festival in Canada this month.
She was one of eight wahine who directed a segment of Waru, which also plays at ImagineNative and opens in cinemas around Aotearoa on October 19.
Mannahatta, a short narrative black and white film made in New York as an acknowledgement of the native people who resided in Manhattan, screened at ImagineNATIVE last year and in this year’s NZ International Film Festival.
