Iwi show commitment to affordable housing
An Auckland Council review of the effectiveness of the special housing areas initiative in creating affordable housing has found the picture would look a lot worse without the involvement of Maori.
Independent Maori Statutory Board chair David Taipari says developments by post-settlement iwi and the Maori Trustee Te Tumu Paeroa account for almost half the 580 affordable homes created since 2013.
"There’s the latest (Waterview) initiative with Waipareira and Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, Ngati Whatua Orakei has done one that is 100 percent affordable housing, and Waimahia (inSouth Auckland) clearly shows collaboration and the utilisation of treaty settlements, working with a bunch of partners. It's exciting for Maori to be able to support Maori across Tamaki Makaurau, in particular around the housing," he says.
David Taipari says even at so called affordable rates whanau Maori may need more help to get into homes.
