Maori Party reviews future
The Maori Party is postponing its normal post-election annual general meeting so it can hold a hui taumata.
President Tukoroirangi Morgan says the election, in which Te Ururoa Flavell lost his Waiariki seat and with it his party's place in parliament, was heart wrenching.
He says members should heed the words of Dame Tariana Turia in her first speech as Maori Party co-leader in Parliament in 2004, that they should focus on what unites, rather than what divides.
Ffor the Maori Party that means kotahitanga, rangatiratanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Co-founder Sir Pita Sharples' maiden speech in Parliament also included a call that for New Zealand to thrive economically, culturally, and with a sense of social justice, Maori must be able to play a full role in all parts of society.
The hui taumata will be held at Auckland University's Waipapa Marae on November 5.
