Ngai Tahu ready to do things differently
The kaiwhakahare of Ngai Tahu is looking at a change in management style and direction for the South Island iwi.
Lisa Tumahai has been chairing the runanga for more than a year since Sir Mark Solomon stepped aside, and she was confirmed in the role at a hui a iwi over the weekend.
The hui marked 20 years since the signing of the Ngai Tahu Settlement, and Ms Tumahai said it was timely to review the governing structure.
She wants to shift away from a presidential style to more a flat front line where individual board members to take responsibility for areas where they have expertise.
She also wants tikanga-based processes at governance level, and an evolutionary change in direction.
"It could be revolutionary for some of the things we do, taking a step shift to ensure we are fit for purpose and that we have a stronger focus on the welfare of our people.and motuhake, mana whenua, mana moana, what do those things actually mean and how can we see them enhanced and strengthened and demonstrated on our marae and in our region," Ms Tumahai says.
