Taurima aiming for influence
The Maori Party’s Tamaki Makaurau candidate says a vote for him is a way to keep Winston Peters at bay.
Shane Taurima says at this stage voters are probably getting sick of the contradictory polls and the attention paid to the main parties.
He says the next Government will be led by either National or Labour, and the Maori Party wants to be part of that Government.
"Now you’ve got a stark choice between New Zealand First who want to get rid of our Maori seats, who have voted against treaty legislation, who want to get rid of Whanau Ora and a whole lot of other kaupapa Maori, or you have got a party with a track record all the way back to 2004 when Tariana (Turia) stood against the seabed and foreshore.
A Roy Morgan poll released on Saturday showed combined support for Labour and the Greens at 48.5 percent, meaning they could govern with Maori Party support.
