Rangatahi to fore as archbishop installed
The struggling Maori Anglican boarding schools could have a new champion.
Hundreds of Anglicans flocked to Manutuke Marae on Saturday for the installation of the Bishop of Tairawhiti, Don Tamihere, as Archbishop of Aotearoa.
Ikaroa Rawhiti MP and Anglican lay reader Meka Whaitiri says highlights were a sermon by Herewini Kaa challenging continued racism within the church, and the role played on the day by students from Te Aute, Hukarere and the local kura.
"That is probably a symbol of where this new archbishop is going to go in terms of focusing on our rangatahi and to make sure they are part and parcel of the changes Don's going to bring to the role in terms of the Maori voice and particularly with our Maori Anglican schools who have not been supported as well as many would have (liked), particularly Tipene, Queen Victoria and Turakina which have all closed," she says.
