New format for Ngapuhi talks
New format for Ngapuhi talks
Ngāpuhi Rūnanga chair Sonny Tau is praising Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little for his bravery in fronting up to Ngāpuhi hapu over the weekend.
Mr Tau attended all five hui in his capacity as deputy chair of Tūhoronuku, the mandated negotiating body.
He says Mr Little made it clear the government would not implement the Maranga Mai report, which proposed replacing Tūhoronuku, and would instead evolve the mandate to strengthen hapu involvement.
The new model would have Tūhoronuku negotiating the main settlement quantum and commercial redress, while separate regional negotiations bodies discuss the cultural redress and historical accounts for each taiwhenua, leading to one settlement but multiple settlement packages.
The crown negotiations would be led by former New Zealand Post chief executive Sir Brian Roche, who led the crown team in the Ngati Awa, Taranaki Whānui Wellington, and Waikato River settlements.
Mr Little will hold hui in south and west Auckland next weekend to gauge the views of Ngāpuhi people there to the proposals.
