Reo Maori educator Professor John Moorfield dies
One of the leading contributors to the teaching of te reo Maori has died.
John Moorfield was the author of a series of Maori language textbooks, Te Kakano, and also pioneered the use of new technologies in teaching te reo Maori.
A Pakeha boy from Te Kauwhata who who got turned on to te reo while attending Hato Tipene in Bombay, he taught at secondary level before being invited to join Timoti Karetu, Te Wharehuia Milroy and the late Hirini Melbourne at the University of Waikato.
After two decades there he headed to Otago University in 1997 to lead Te Tumu, the school of Maori, Pacific and indigenous studies.
He shifted to Auckland University of Technology as Professor in Maori Innovation and Development and also set up the national Maori language institute Te Ipukarea.
