Teachers need help over fear factor

A Māori education consultant says many in the sector need help to get over the fear factor when it comes to teaching Māori children.
Rosalie Reiri works for education consultancy Core, whose conference in Auckland last week attracted 1500 teachers.
She says there is definitely a shift in consciousness going on, with increasing numbers of teachers and principals having the best intentions to do well for their Māori students.
But they acknowledge they often don’t have the knowledge or skills required.
"They’re actually fearful of getting it wrong, they're scared of getting a growling, they're scared of not saying things right so I think there's also a message there for us as Māori to help support our wider whanau, that's our Pākeha whānau and even being here in Auckland our diverse whānau, to have access to our world. We don't have to give everything over but to give them support so they can because we need everybody on board our waka," Ms Reiri says.
