Te Mangai Paho a reo funder
The head of Te Māngai Paho says it’s not longer just a broadcast funding agency.
Larry Parr says the media landscape has change, which is why it has signed a memorandum Te Puni Kōkiri to work with and Te Taura Whiri and Māori Television to support Maihi Karauna, the crown’s Māori language strategy.
Part of the package will $300,000 for a pilot to create Snap Reo, which will be micro-language lessons aimed at rangatahi and probably shared on social media.
He says that’s consistent with its objectives.
"We don’t regard ourselves as being a Māori broadcast funding agency. We're a Māori language agency, That's what our money is for. We happen to work in the broadcast space and the money that we spend in broadcasting and in media is to generate Māori language outcomes," Mr Parr says.
He says it’s logical for organisations working on Māori language revival to collaborate.
