Vietnam veterans focus of Manukau expo
Vietnam veterans and their whānau are the focus of a hui this weekend at AUT’s South Auckland campus.
Veterans Services manager Sharon Cavanagh says it follows a similar health and wellbeing expo in Christchurch in March.
She says a 2006 settlement means there is extra money in the system to deal with the complex needs of Vietnam veterans.
"We know that there were a number of conditions, including some of those related to Agent Orange, so already for Vietnam veterans there are a number of what we call presumptive conditions so conditions that we know through their service in Vietnam it is highly likely that some will suffer from those," Ms Cavanagh says.
As well as a chance for health checks and to learn more about the services offered by groups like the event partner Ranfurly Veterans Trust, the expo is a chance for the veterans to meet up with old companions.
