Parental migration test irks Indian advocates
New Zealand First MP Shane Jones has snapped back at the Indian Weekender’s attack on his party’s role in a change to immigration rules.
The Auckland-based newspaper has described the new rules around allowing migrants to bring their parents on a long-term basis as elitist, arrogant and ignorant.
It singled out New Zealand First, which claimed credit for key aspects of the policy.
Mr Jones says the party is known for its strong stance on immigration.
"I say to the owner of the Indian newspaper, stop your agitating. It is the Indian government itself that is denying its own indigenous people, many millions of people, of their rights to citizenship and their rights in land ownership so sort their own problems out, don't come to Aotearoa and attack New Zealand First," he says.
Mr Jones says he’s not concerned about polls showing New Zealand First not getting back into parliament, because the ability of the party to campaign should not be underestimated.
