Partnerships unlock Rotorua lakefront development
Rotorua Lakes mayor Steve Chadwick says a combination of the Provincial Growth Fund and partnerships with iwi is unlocking development in the sulphur city.
A karakia was held yesterday to mark the start of redeveloping the lakefront with a new boardwalk and terracing along the lake edge.
Mayor Chadwick says the $40 million redevelopment pulls together Ngāti Whakaue who gifted the lakefront reserve, Pukeroa Oruawhata Trust’s spa development, the restoration of the earthquake-damaged museum and the interests of Ōhinemutu village.
"So we’ve had all of those partners involved with us on the development and design of the lakefront so that it looks a smooth journey, it tells the story of our past but also very symbolic of the way we go forward together as a community," she says.
Meanwhile, landowner Pukeroa Oruawhata has reached an agreement with Queen Elizabeth Health Trust allowing QE Health to build a new spa and wellness centre next to its current building, which was originally built as a convalescent hospital for servicemen returning from World War II.
