Council facilities manager adds te ao Maori expert
The body which looks after Auckland’s art galleries, concert halls, sports stadiums and zoos has appointed its first kaupapa Māori general manager.
She is Helen Te Hira of Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara, Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Ngāti Kahu and Ngāpuhi, who was previously the principal treaty advisor on Auckland Council’s Māori responsiveness.
She designed the council’s Ngā Kete Akoranga cultural competency staff training programme and its MAHI Māori workforce strategy.
Regional Facilities Auckland chief executive Chris Brooks says the creation of the role demonstrates a commitment to the Māori community and staff, and a desire to embed te ao Māori across the organisation.
