Pay equity on the way for teacher aides
More than 22,000 school teacher aides are set to get pay increases of up to 28 per cent under a historic pay equity settlement.
All teacher aides in schools and kura will have the opportunity to attend Zoom hui to discuss the details before voting online to endorse the deal.
Schools will be funded to pay the increased rates, which will work out to between $4 and $6.60 an hour.
NZEI Te Riu Roa kicked off the pay equity process with the Ministry of Education in 2016.
President Liam Rutherford says it confirmed teacher aides have been significantly undervalued and underpaid for decades because they are predominantly women.
The settlement will pave the way for pay equity settlements for other support staff groups, such as administrators and Kaiārahi i te Reo.
