Threat to south Taranaki seabed continues
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui is gearing up for yet another court battle with the company that wants to mine the seabed off its coast.
It will ask the Supreme Court to refuse leave for Trans-Tasman Resources to appeal the recent Court of Appeal decision blocking its seabed mining consent.
Kaiarataki Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says it’s the fourth time the south Taranaki iwi has had to fight the iron sand miner, and it’s especially annoying when its efforts are focused on protecting its community from COVID-19.
She says the company needs to give up its crusade to use south Taranaki as a testing ground for what is a risky and untested extractive practice.
