Taranaki trip a lesson in atonement
The Green Party’s James Shaw and his co-leader Marama Davidson have been in Taranaki today – visiting schools.
It’s an attempt to make amends for Mr Shaw’s stumble in pushing for an $11 million investment from the shovel ready infrastructure fund in a privately-run green school in the region.
He says that highlighted the challenge created by long-term under-investment in school buildings – which the $2 billion committed by over the past three years is just starting to address.
"Really the whole school estate right around Aotearoa is in a tragic state and I think in this campaign, it is good to see other political parties realise that perhaps they made a mistake in not keeping up with the funding that was required," he says.
Mr Shaw says future governments also need to address the inequality in funding for kura Māori.
