Women in COVID crunch as food banks ramp up
The Auckland City Missioner says women are bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 job losses.
Chris Farrelly says June quarter labour market statistics show of the 11,000 jobs gone, 10,000 belonged to women.
That was reflected in demand for food parcels, which in the same quarter was 175 percent up on the previous year.
"Women are bearing the brunt of this at the moment and a lot of those women are solo mums. That's where the need is biting at the moment we are experiencing, mums, and mums have to make choices. Bus fares, something for the school, something for the car, a power bill, a debt collector coming in, what's left? Oh well, we won't eat today," he says.
