Tarakihi plan fails court test
Forest & Bird is celebrating a High Court judgment that the Minister of Fisheries was wrong to rely on a voluntary industry fishing plan when setting catch limits for tarakihi.
Chief executive Kevin Hague says the court confirmed fishing decisions must put sustainability before the commercial interests of the fishing industry.
He says the tarakihi stock on the entire eastern side of the country has been fished down to just 15 per cent of the natural population, and the Industry Rebuild Plan shouldn't have been allowed to replace an appropriate catch limit.
