Smoothie company gets research boost
Māori food business Kaitahi As One has been given $54,000 by the High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge to research bioactive components present in indigenous ingredients which can be incorporated into its smoothie drops.
The Whanganui-based firm uses taonga species such as kūmara, pūhā, kawakawa and rewarewa honey as well as fruits, greens, and seeds in the drops, which can be blended into a beverage.
It will work with Massey University’s Riddett Institute and consultants Smart Regulatory Solutions on the project.
Project leader Arohaina Owen says it gives the iwi business the opportunity to move to the next stage of growth.
