Delamere Cup nursery for kapa haka stars
While thousands of people pack into Manukau Sports Arena today for Polyfest, down near East Cape the per capita attendance will probably be higher at the Delamere Cup.
It’s the first time in its 60-year history that the kapa haka competition for Eastern Bay of Plenty primary schools has been held in Whangaparaoa.
Local resident and Waiariki MP Rawiri Waititi says the competition named for Māori Battalion veteran Takamoana Delamere is one of the main calendar events in the area.
It’s great training for the next generation of kapa haka stars – and MCs.
"Some of our ex students and some of our secondary school students , we are going to start brining through some new talent, showing them the ropes of how to entertain our crowds and also how to bring people together, and that's what it's all about – succession planning," Mr Waititi says.
