Human Rights Commission backs MWWL voice
Government ministers may be staying away from the Maori Women’s Welfare League national conference in Whangarei, but the Human Rights Commission is there to tautoko its work.
Indigenous Rights Commissioner Karen Johansen says the league’s enduring legacy lives on in wahine Maori across Aotearoa who continue to serve Maori people.
The commission supports its call that Maori women are central to any policy solution for at risk mokopuna Maori.
The CYF Expert Panel has reported that almost 3000 of the 5000 children in state care are Maori, and the league says it has the national network and the decades of experience working in Maori communities to be able to develop effective solutions.
