Tuhoronuku tackles hapu gripes
Ngapuhi claim settlement body Tuhoronuku is trying to recover from a Waitangi Tribunal report critical of the way the crown granted it a mandate.
Its new chair Hone Sadler and deputy Kara George have met with Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson to discuss how to resolve any issues holding back the settlement.
Mr Sadler says he assured the minister that Tuhoronuku’s audit and risk committee was addressing concerns about voting for hapu kaikorero.
They have asked lawyer Moana Tuwhare, who Mr George ousted as deputy, to lead a process of working through other issues raised by Ngapuhi hapu.
They also sought further funding and were told to work with the Office of Treaty Settlements on a new financial plan.
Tuhoronuku’s opponents want negotiations halted until a more representative structure can be developed.
