Preserves over politics Fox recipe for strong whanau
The Maori Women's Welfare League wants to get more political, but a politician thinks it should stick to knitting.
The league is holding its annual conference in Whangarei, and it has thrown the floor open for debates on the major political issues of the day, such as the Trans Pacific Partnership and the reform of the Child, Youth and Family service.
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says the league needs to be a voice for Maori women but it should also be engaging with young Maori women to pass on skills like knitting, sewing, growing and preserving kai, and mothering skills such as mirimiri and raising children in a communal environment.
"I would love to see those things passed on to our young women. I think you look around at CYF and all those issues we are facing with our young children, yes we can have a political voice but more than that we can have a real impact on the way in which we raise our families and strengthening our families so we can strengthen our babies," she says.
