Koutu to remember Nia Glassie
The Rotorua community of Te Koutu is holding a remembrance evening on August 8 to remember Nia Glassie who died in tragic circumstances eight years ago to the day.
Her death brought national attention to the issue of child abuse and the community of Te Koutu when her mother was found guilty of manslaughter and her partner and his brother of murder.
Lauren James of Te Koutu Community Action group says the kaupapa around the eighth anniversary of 3 year old Nia's death has come about because the community hasn't been through a healing process.
She says its time not to allow the tragedy to define Koutu anymore.
Lauren James says Te Koutu is going through great changes with youth doing some great things and kaumatua providing leadership.
The main activity will be a silent candle light vigil to which Police who worked on the case have been invited with other community leaders.
