New Plymouth councillor Howie Tamati says he is highly embarrassed by a referendum's decision not to create a Maori ward in the district.
Councilor Tamati says there are groups in the community who feel disaffected and not looked after by the larger body after the Council's decision to create a Maori ward was rejected at the polls in May.
He told this week's council meeting that they still need to do something to fulfill their statutory obligation's to Maori so the district can move forward.
