Sallies want law to make government provide housing
The Salvation Army says shelter is a basic human right and want a law compelling government to provide housing for a predominantly Maori problem.
That's the conclusion of a report into homeslessness by the Salvation Army's Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit which looked into the lives of 19 people living rough in Waitakere and found they had no alternative but to sleep in bus shelters, cars, under buildings or bridges or in a tent.
Social Policy analyst Reina Harris says the Government should be statutorily required to provide adequate housing .
"Approximately just over 9 were of Maori descent but we know nationally that the trend for those who are sleeping rough or those who are homeless are predominantly Maori
Reina Harris said the Government must recognise the Auckland housing crisis is impacting on many peoples lives.
