Poverty action praises mother
Child Poverty Action group is praising the bravery of a single mother who has taken WINZ to the Auckland High Court when they claimed money back from her for allegedly being in a relationship.
An economist with the group Susan St John says in the case heard yesterday the Department of Social Welfare say the women with 3 children illegally claimed $117,000 over four years while in a relationship.
" She's had the courage to fight the repayment imposed upon her which has not been sensible in any sense with her living conditions"says Susan St John.
She says the woman whose name is supressed is just one of many mothers who are being hounded by WINZ and the delayed decision will be a landmark one.
