CYF crisis makes case for reform
Labour MP Peeni Henare says a damning report by Children's Commissioner Russell Wills highlights the need for a major review of Child, Youth and Family.
The report accused the service of having a dump and run culture and of failing to properly protect the children in its care.
Mr Henare says he’s also concerned by the revelation that the proportion of children in care who are Maori is rising, and now make up 56 percent of the total.
"I think that there is scope now for Child Youth and Family to have a good hard look at themselves. Start embracing some ways and some new practices and programmes that will better serve our tamariki and better serve and support those families that do look after foster children," he says.
