Ranginui hui to get housing update
Ngati Ranginui members will tomorrow get an update on their iwi’s plans to buy some of the state houses in the Tauranga.
The Government is selling more than 1100 houses in the western Bay of Plenty as a pilot for a wider sell-off of Housing New Zealand stock.
It has given the iwi right of first refusal on 115 of the houses.
Nga Hapu o Ngati Ranginui Settlement Trust chair Te Pio Kawe says housing was raised during treaty settlement negotiations, so the crown know how important it is to the iwi.
"The uptake of the Housing New Zealand properties is part of that framework in terms of proving affordable safe housing, where possible close to our marae, so the aspiration at the time was around providing more housing, moving us out of some of the poor housing conditions some of our whanau have experienced," he says.
The Hui a Iwi is at Wairoa Marae in Bethlehem.
