New wairua for collaboration
The head of a trust which is trying to increase the number of young Maori capable of running businesses says collaboration is becoming increasingly important to iwi and Maori businesses.
Te Putea Whakatupu Trust, which is funded from the Maori Fisheries Settlement is running its annual Charting Pathways for Maori Industry Futures conference in Kirikiriroa this week.
Richard Jefferies says it's a chance for Maori industry leaders to set pathways and share their vision, and also for the young people who receive He Putea Whakatupu scholarships to network and learn.
He says as the treaty settlement process starts fading into the past new challenges emerge.
"I certainly sense that the wairua is changing and the opportunities for collaboration will increase as people start talking to each other and hopefully pull together visions they can work on together rather than tribes and other trusts trying to do things on their own. That is fine but there are also a lot of answers in us doing stuff collaboratively," Mr Jefferies says.
He says demand for scholarships is growing, with 45 current scholarship holders attending this week's conference.
