Panuku signals city’s advance
Auckland Mayor Len Brown is welcoming the addition of a Maori term to the city’s new council controlled organisation.
Panuku Development Auckland was created through a merger of Waterfront Auckland and Auckland Council Properties Ltd.
It’s designed to encourage economic development by facilitating urban redevelopment that takes into account public transport, sustainable infrastructure and quality public services.
Some councilors say officials kept them in the dark about the addition of the term Panuku, which aims to convey the idea of moving forward like a well-steered waka.
But Mr Brown says it harks back to the city’s original motto, Advance.
"Probably you could reinterpret it or redefine it under that word panuku so I think that’s a great word to choose. It is very much about the city. There are a lot of things about our city we are proud of and one of those things is that the city is always very forward looking, that we have been and will continue to be a place that reaches forward," he says.
