Clustering to lure Heidi and Fritz
A Rotorua tourism promoter says the Maori tourism operators are learning how collaboration can boost their business.
Oscar Nathan talked at yesterday’s Maori Tourism Trade Day at Auckland Museum about how Maori can work with regional tourism organisations like his Destination Rotorua.
He says the day was valuable as a chance not only for the 50 or so Maori businesses to not only network together but to hear directly from the inbound tour operators.
Mr Nathan says tour operators are constantly looking for new experiences for their customers.
"For a lot of our smaller Maori businesses, one of the key message was to look at ways of clustering with other Maori businesses in terms of influencing itineraries and programmes, because it’s quite difficult to be a one man band and pop up and influence an itinerary that an inbound operator is working through a wholesaler through the travel network to then land with Heidi and Fritz over in Germany when they are making a purchase decision," he says.
Mr Nathan says Rotorua itself is changing, with two thirds of its visitors now domestic and mountain biking an increasingly important attraction.
