Tuwharetoa and Waikato Regional Council team up to protect awa
Ngati Tuwharetoa and Waikato Regional Council have signed an agreement on how they will work together to restore and protect the health of the Waikato River.
It’s the last of five joint management agreement to be signed between the council and the Waikato River iwi.
Council chief executive Vaughan Payne says Ngati Tuwharetoa’s inter-generational vision and its extensive experience with the upper Waikato and Taupo waters will make a valuable contribution to council’s decision making.
The agreement’s provisions include how Ngati Tuwharetoa and the council will work together on matters such as:
· River-related monitoring and enforcement activities
· Planning documents
· Engagement for relevant resource consent applications
· The provision for other agreed processes to be developed, such as iwi customary activities.
A co-governance committee has been established with equal numbers of council and Tuwharetoa representatives.
