Ground clean for New Plymouth Marae
Taranaki Regional Council and the government’s Contaminated Sites Remediation Fund have confirmed land near New Plymouth’s port can be used as a marae.
Te Atiawa hapu Ngati Te Whiti has a $4 million marae planned for the site, which came back as part of its treaty settlement.
The land had been the site of two old oil wells.
No significant contamination was found, although there was some some low-level asbestos contamination from old baches.
Ngati Te Whiti chief executive Shaun Keenan says tenders will be called this month for the new marae.
It will be the first marae in the city for more than 150 years,
