Waikato Tainui looks ahead
Waikato Tainui’s tribal parliament has a new name Te Whakakitenga o Waikato, or the foresight of Waikato.
The name was given at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia markng the end of a three-year review of the tribe’s governance and representation structure.
King Tuheitia says it harks back to a saying by his tupuna King Taawhiao:
Mehemea kare kau ana he whakakitenga, ka mate te iwi. Where there is no vision, the people will perish.
He says representatives need a constant reminder to think about future generations.
Nanaia Mahuta, the co-chair of the review team, says people wanted clarity of roles and responsibilities.
They also wanted a way to deal with issues more efficiently in-house and within tikanga.
