Shallow lakes get research boost
The Waikato River Authority is putting money into improving the health of the shallow lakes alongside the river, such as Waikare and Waahi.
The latest grants have been welcomed by a group that has signed the Waikato District Lakes and Freshwater Wetlands Memorandum of Agreement, which includes Waikato-Tainui, local government, the Department of Conservation and Fish and Game.
Group chair Jan Sedgwick says the shallow lakes are vulnerable to problems caused by hydrological modification, nutrient enrichment, and invasive pest plants and animals such as koi carp.
Funded projects include computer modelling and the identification of options for better lake management, and the creation of a wetland on Lake Waikare’s northern foreshore to support biodiversity.
A public meeting on problems facing Lake Waikare will beheld in Te Kauwhata on March 16.
