Maori Party shift allows RMA reform
The Maori Party says increasing the supply of affordable housing is one reason it has changed its position and now supports an overhaul of the Resource Management Act.
Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says it has been assured there will be no change to sections six and seven which ensure environmental protection remains paramount.
On that basis and the promise of continued negotiations it supports the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill being sent a a select committee.
Fellow MP Marama Fox says the party has been working with the Government for nine months on changes to the bill.
It wants resource law that properly protects natural resources, recognises the kaitiaki role of iwi, and supports an increase in the supply of affordable housing.
She says getting rid of unnecessary red tape around planning and consent is necessary to increase the supply of affordable house.
The Bill will also help papakainga housing to be developed, complementing reform of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act which promotes the use of Maori land including for housing initiatives.
Mrs Fox says the Maori Party successfully advocated for new Iwi Participation Agreements that will require councils to engage with iwi during their planning processes.
