Rich field in Maori Sports Awards
The Maori Sports Awards return tomorrow to where it all started, Turangawaewae Marae, to mark its 25th year highlighting Maori sporting achievement.
Organiser Dick Garrett says rather than keeping the list to three finalists, there are five nominees in each category to show the depth of talent out there.
Even then the awards can’t capture everyone, as new stars have emerged across the sporting pantheon ionce nominations closed.
They include Australian-based jockey Ben Thompson of Ngati Paoa, who won the recent Apprentice World Championship Final in Abu Dhabi, trampoline silver medallist Te Aroha Kieran Tuhi, GP2 racer Mitch Evans who picked up a spot endurance testing for Porsche, and Cathy Cross from Ngati Maniapoto, who has been the first woman named to officiate at the ICC women's world 20-20 cricket gualifier
The Maori Sports Awards will be broadcast by Radio Tainui on Radio Waatea and the iwi network from 5 to 9 tomorrow evening.
