Prison challenge earns Davis front row seat
Challenging Government inaction on violence in Serco-run prisons and the treatment of New Zealanders in Australian detention centres has won Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis a place on Labour’s front bench.
Mr Davis says he’s concerned that mismanagement of prisons is crippling efforts at rehabilitation.
"All these people come out and they are going to live next to you and I in our communities and I want them to be better people when they come out of prison or come out of detention centres so they get on with life and lead successful lives. This is what politics is about, making lives better for people," he says.
Kelvin Davis keeps his shadow corrections role, and he’s also been asked to mark Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell.
Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta slipped from 4 to 12 in the caucus ranking but remains the party’s treaty negotiations spokesperson, while Meka Whaitiri and Peeni Henare have been promoted into Labour’s shadow cabinet.
