Peters picks photo op budget
It’s Budget day tomorrow, but New Zealand First leader Winston Peters isn’t expecting significant gains for Maori.
He’s picking a lot of the budget will be a belated attempt to address the problems created by immigration and the continuing growth of Auckland.
He says Maori Development Minster Te Ururoa is a nice guy, but he’s not tough enough to get the kind of policy wins Maori need, which is why support for the Maori Party is waning.
National’s concern for Maori doesn’t extend far beyond photo opportunities.
"We all remember 2008, Mr Key picks a young girl out of Tamaki, takes her off to Waitangi, the big display, it was all for show. Where is that Maori girl now? Well she like so many shot off to Australia where they have found a better future," Mr Peters says.
He can’t understand how Bill English is rated a good manager of the country’s finances given the huge debt he has built up and the decline in manufacturing and export revenues.
