Iwi work leads to TPK role
A lifetime working at for Maori development has prepared Whanganui’s Nancy Tuaine for her new role as advisor at Te Puni Kokiri.
She started her career in the Ministry for Maori Development in the early 1990s, before moving on to Te Oranganui Iwi Health Authority and then managing the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board for a decade.
She’s been back at Te Oranganui for the past four years as its chief executive, and she also stood at the last election as the Maori Party candidate for Whanganui.
She says it all gives her the flax roots perspectives needed for good policy.
"Everything that we do is crafted by the policy that comes out of Wellington. This opportunity for me is to see whether we can influence that in the right way. What i've been really active at home practising and making sure that we build good systems and support for our w'anau, actually we've got to have an impact on policy," she says.
Nancy Tuaine says having been involved in the development of Whanau Ora she’s interested in the thinking behind the new social sector reforms.
