Fault creates opportunity for iwi
Ngai Tahu Tourism has consilidated its key role in South Westland tourism by opening a major new visitor hub in Franz Josef.
As well as housing the company it owns with Te Runanga o Makaawhio, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Te Ao Marama includes space for the Department of Conservation, Glacier Hot Pools, i-SITE Franz Josef and a café.
Ngai Tahu kaiwhakahaere Sir Mark Solomon says the development reflects the area's enormous cultural and spiritual significance to the people of Ngai Tahu.
He says it reinforces the iwi focus on kaitiakitanga and confirms a growing relationship with DOC.
The complex anchors a new business area created after Westland District Council ruled out new building or renovation in an earthquake risk zone around the Alpine Fault, which runs through the village.
