Tuhoronuku hands over to hapu
Ngapuhi claim settlement body Tuhoronuku has unanimously voted to shed its power and hand over a lot of the responsibility for overseeing negotiations to hapu.
Moana Tuwhare, the chair of the engagement group working with Tuhoronuku's critics to develop a new way forward, says the board has accepted the bulk of the recommendations made in the draft report Maranga Mai.
She says decision making shifts from the 22-member board to hapu in the regions.
The board will be cut to six – one from each region and one representing urban Ngapuhi – and its function will be mainly administrative.
"The other component that is quite different from what we have now is there will be a Ngapuhi-wide discussion forum which will be the space in which hapu and regions come together on generic issues and Ngapuhi-wide issues or multi-regional issues and make recommendations back to the hapu on what we do on any given issue," Ms Tuwhare says.
She says there is also a withdrawl mechanism so hapu which don't want to be part of the settlement can exit.
