Kainga Whenua fails to deliver
Labour’s Maori development spokesperson says the Maori Party’s housing plan has been a complete failure
Kelvin Davis says the kainga whenua scheme was pitched as a savings plan to put more Maori into homes, but it is making fewer than five loans a year.
He says it’s proof the Maori Party’s partnership with National is of no benefit to Maori.
Mr Davis says Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has stood by as the Maori home ownership rate plummeted to 28 percent and while Maori are five times more likely to be homeless than Pakeha.
He says the Maori Party must also explain why it supported National’s state house sell off, given over 42 percent of those on the wait list are Maori and no iwi provider has been successful in purchasing the properties.
