Upgrade for Waikato Maori studies
Waikato University has upgraded its school of Maori and Pacific development to faculty status, and to celebrate has created 15 new scholarships for school leavers.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley says Te Pua Wananga ki te Ao, The Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies reflects the University’s strength in teaching and research in Maori language, culture and knowledge.
He says indigenous studies is an important area of teaching and research internationally, and the concepts it explores are very much applicable on a global level.
The changes are part of a wider move to create more flexible degree programmes.
Professor Brendan Hokowhitu, the dean of the new faculty, says Te Pua Wananga ki te Ao is open to all students, and next year will offer a Maori for absolute beginners paper as well as collaborative teaching with other faculties.
From 2018 the Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies will offer two majors, Maori and Indigenous Studies and Te Reo Maori, as well as Pacific and Indigenous Studies major taught in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
