Candidates unhappy with Ihumatao development
Front-running Auckland mayoral candidate Phil Goff says he's willing to put pressure on Fletcher Residential to change its plans for developing rural land in Mangere.
The 480 home development has sparked protests from locals under Save Our Unique Landscape banner because of its impact on the neighbouring Otuataua Stonefields and on the Ihumatao community living around Makaurau Marae.
Mr Goff told a mayoral debate at Nga Whare Waatea Marae that the area would be more suited to a Waimahia-style development with a focus on affordable housing.
"It's before the Environment Court. The only thing we can do and I'm happy to do it is go to Fletcher says say 'hey, what other arrangements can be made so the nature of this community can be preserved,' but in the end it will be the Environment Court and Fletchers that make that decision, but let's put a bit of pressure on Fletchers," he says.
The other mayoral candidates also spoke against the development, with Mark Thomas and Chloe Swarbrick calling for land swaps to protect it.
