Smart Kokako wins design award
The system the Maori broadcast funding agency uses to monitor the amount of te reo Maori playing out on radio and television has won the top prize in the interactive category of this year’s New Zealand Best Design Awards.
Kokako uses technology developed by Dragonfly Data Science to recognise spoken or sung Maori content.
The identity and user interface were designed another Wellington firm, Salted Herring.
Te Mangai Paho chair Piri Sciascia said the technology had played an important role in helping promote modern and natural Maori language use and making Maori programmes and music more accessible to a broader audience.
He says being able to speak te reo Maori on air naturally alongside English, encourages increased use of Maori language, and Kokako provides a way of measuring segments of Maori content as it appears
