Community response needed to drug scourge
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says more policing isn’t the answer to P, and there needs to be a community response to drugs.
He says it’s not just a law and order issue but has important health and social dimensions.
The situation seems to be escalating.
"The murders in the north they are my relations sadly. We know that a lot of the drugs are being produced up there and coming into Tamaki Makaurau. The only way we are going to stop this is as a whanau we come together. We know who these people are we know who the operators are in this space and we need start having some very hard conversations as a whanau and a community," he says.
Peeni Henare says his experience tackling gang violence in his home town of Moerewa before he entered parliament proved the power of communities to make positive changes.
