Housing crisis unsettling schools
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says the government was warned a year ago that high housing costs were making it hard for many Auckland schools to find teachers.
Mount Albert Grammar has revealed it is losing three teachers who say they have to move to other centres if they are to buy a house.
Ms Wall says in her electorate some schools have vacancies open because prospective staff can’t find affordable homes to buy or rent.
Some schools are talking about building their own teacher accommodation.
"It is incredibly worrying because if we don't have the qualified teachers then obviously our children aren't amximising the educational opportunities they have and it also means schools are having to rely sometimes on people who aren't fully qualified and don't have the necessary skills to be in front of our kids," she says.
Louisa Wall says it’s a central government issue
